Respect for Old Glory
Hey everyone! we get a lot of questions every day that our customer service team is happy to help you find the answers to. I felt inspired to write a quick post on Respect for the US Flag because it is something we are asked about at least daily.
US Code Title 4 is commonly known as "flag code" and covers respect and display of the US Flag at the federal level.
Now, a lot of the flag code is pretty common sense, but are are some beneficial parts that may help you fly your flag proudly on your Service First Flagpole Kit.
Section 8 of that code, which is titled, "Respect for flag" outlines the following.
- The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
- The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
- The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free.
- The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free.
- The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
With that information let's dispel a myth really quickly!
MYTH: You have to burn the flag if it touches the ground.
TRUTH: While we strive to handle the flag with the utmost care, you are actually NOT REQUIRED to burn or otherwise destroy the flag if it touches the ground. Do your best to avoid that situation by caring for the flag and its handling, and if it does touch the ground, promptly correct it and clean the flag as necessary.
---
MYTH: The flag should never be flown at night
TRUTH: Traditionally the flag is flown from dawn until dusk, however, the flag can be flown 24 hours a day as long as it is illuminated through the night.
We do still advise lowering the flag in instances of inclement weather for its protection and longevity.
---
MYTH: A flag must be folded into a triangle for storage.
TRUTH: The triangularly folded flag is a part of military tradition, and is not dictated in the flag code. It is important and proper to store your flag with the utmost care and respect to avoid damage, discoloration, or disrespectful display.
